Life on the water

Your backyard is Autauga Creek

Autauga Creek winds past the campground on its way to the Alabama River. Cast a line, launch a kayak, cool off on a hot afternoon, or just watch the ducks from the bank.

  • The only campground on the Autauga Creek Canoe TrailAs listed by the Alabama Tourism Department
  • A National Recreation TrailThe 13-mile canoe trail earned the national designation in 2015
  • Fishing, paddling and swimmingBring your rod, your kayak or just your sandals
  • Float right to your campsiteSee the 3-mile route from downtown

Creek levels change quickly after heavy rain, and fallen trees can block parts of the lower trail. Ask at the office about current conditions before you float.

Kayak & float

Float from downtown Prattville to your campsite

Put in below the old mill dam downtown and drift about three miles of shady, winding creek right to the campground. The City of Prattville's Kayak Trail Fun Run, usually held in June, paddles right past the campground on this route.

Route follows Autauga Creek as mapped by the USGS. Distances are approximate.

  • 3.2miles
  • 1½–2½hours
  • I–IIgentle class
  1. Put in downtown. Start at the Creekwalk behind City Hall (101 W Main St), just below the dam. Park in the paved lot and slide your boat down the grassy bank. The historical marker there tells how Daniel Pratt built his mills on this creek in the 1830s.
  2. Drift south. The creek winds past cypress trees, bamboo and little waterfalls. Watch for sandbars and the occasional downed tree.
  3. Pull out at your campsite. The campground sits right on the bank. Canoe Trail Park (1123 Rueben Rd), with restrooms and a sandy beach, is about half a mile farther downstream.

Glass isn't allowed on Autauga Creek, and life jackets are a must. The creek has sharp turns, so kayaks are easier than canoes for beginners. Water levels change quickly after rain, so ask the office about current conditions before you float.
